Charter officers of the Wake County Fireman's Association, elected in January 1956. From left to right are Gordon Keith Jr. of Cary (Secretary-Treasurer), J. B. Keeter of Raleigh (First Vice President), Bob Heater of Cary (President), and C. S. Schaub of Apex (Second Vice President).
News & Observer, 1/5/56.
5/2/08 Reminder that the next quarterly supper / meeting will be held on Tuesday, 13 May 2008 (B-shift), 6:30p at Durham Highway Fire Department. All are welcome to attend!
5/2/08 The New Hope Valley Railway in Bonsal, NC (about 9 miles south of Apex just off Old US 1) is hosting Firefighters Day on Sunday, 6/1/08 (C-shift). They are inviting departments to bring their antique, historic and/or heritage fire equipment for a special display. Railway organizers anticipate having anywhere from 900 to 1200 visitors that day based on their normal attendance numbers, so it would be a great opportunity to distribute fire safety materials, demonstrate equipment and even collect donations. Those interested can contact Bob Crowley at (919) 362-5416 for more information.
4/5/08 As announced at the last meeting, several committees have been established within the Association, and we looking for input and participation from additional members on each of these. If anyone is interested in contributing, please contact the corresponding committee chair:
2/20/08 Artists, sharpen your pencils!! We are taking submittals for our Wake County Firefighters Association logo contest. The new logo would become the official symbol of the association, and will be used on t-shirts, hats, this web site, etc. The only rule is that the logo must incorporate the association name. Entries can be sent to President Bryan Lane at blane4@nc.rr.com (or if they are on paper, he can arrange to pick them up). The winning logo will be announced at the May meeting, and the submitter will be awarded a $100 prize to go along with the bragging rights. Deadline for submissions is May 2, 2008.
2/20/08 Any departments interested in reserving the fire safety trailer, please email Leslie Brinson early to ensure availability (especially over Fire Prevention week!). Click the "Fire Safety Trailer" button on the menu for more details about the trailer and to view the 2008 reservation calendars.
2/12/08 The Association is proposing setting up a Benevolent Fund which would provide immediate monetary aid to the beneficiary in the event of a member passing away. Members would be able to subscribe to the fund on a voluntary basis. President Lane has drafted by-laws for this fund - click HERE to view them. Please email Bryan with any comments or suggestions.
2/12/08 I will be working on enhancing this web site in order for it to become a better vehicle for communication of important announcements, events, and much more. I have just implemented a new email list subscription - we will be using this to disseminate information as needed. To sign up, click the "Email List" button on the menu and provide your email address. If anyone has other suggestions for this web site, please email me and I will do my best to make it happen!
12/24/06 For those interested in knowing about fire service events happening around the state, there is a great new resource FIREcalendar.com (sponsored by the same folks that run FireNews.net). This is an on-line calendar where everyone can post things like training classes, conventions/conferences, fire colleges, association meetings, etc. You can also sign up for event alerts, weekly email of schedules, etc. Click the link above to check it out!
2/15/06 The Feed The Firefighters Foundation, which has for years been providing food services to emergency workers around the county at no cost to the departments, has undertaken an exciting new project. They are renovating a large RV and turning it into a mobile rehab unit. It will have food preparation / serving facilities, rest rooms, and shelter from the elements, and will be available to emergency workers 24 / 7, 365 days a year!! The foundation has never charged for their services, and relies solely on donations. To read all about the foundation, and find out how you can help with their efforts, visit their web site at http://www.feedthefirefighters.com.
