In 1996 the Wake County Firefighter's Association with the support of the fire departments in Wake County purchased a fire safety trailer to assist in teaching children of all ages about fire safety. Since its delivery, thousands of children in Wake County have been through the trailer. It is used in schools, open houses and public safety days throughout the county. |
| The trailer is 28' long and has a first and second floor. The first floor features a living area with a simulated fireplace and complete kitchen area. The second floor features an interior stairway, sleeping quarters, sliding glass door, deck, and fire escape ladder. | ![]() |
There is also a control room that allows a firefighter to operate the trailer's many simulation systems. These systems include a working 911 emergency telephone system, a non-toxic smoke generator, a heated door that teaches children to feel the door before opening it, smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher.
After many years of heavy use, the trailer was in need of significant repairs, and was sent to a shop for a complete overhaul in 2003. As of November 2003, this repair work is just about complete, having cost the Association about $5,000. Many thanks to Ronnie Coats, Captain (ret.) of Cary Fire Department, who has donated the carpet and padding, as well as his services for the installation.
Wake County departments are encouraged to reserve the trailer for use at their functions. We do ask that if there are any problems that occur with the trailer such as broken or malfunctioning equipment, structural damage, etc., that they are brought to the Association board's attention as soon as possible so that they can be addressed immediately.
The trailer is currently housed at Knightdale Public Safety. Departments will need to make arrangements to pick up and return the trailer to that location.
